Dietary & Nutritional Interventions

One of the most inexpensive ways to find out if certain foods are being malabsorbed in the gut or otherwise irritating the system, is by eliminating offensive foods from the diet. Testing can be helpful to find out certain sensitivities, in addition to trial and error. As we know, good nutrition and supporting proper gut flora will help any human to fight viruses and bacteria, and repair damage done by the environment.

Good nutrition will help any human to fight viruses and bacteria, and repair damage done by the environment. This is no exception for autistic people, for whom many have internal damage or chronic illness that must be addressed. Medical professionals who specialize in autism can test to see where deficiencies lie, and can supplement that individual based on their internal biology.

Susan Owens, MAIS, RA
"The Low Oxalate Diet"

Since completing her masters degree at the University of Texas in Dallas, Susan Owens has lectured internationally and has also presented at the Center for Disease Control and the National Institute of Health. Susan has focused on finding the basic science that tells us how the sulfur system works: how it is integrated, how it matures, and how it interacts with other systems and what it does in neurodevelopment. Oxalates appear to be part of the sulfur system, but their role outside the well-characterized role of binding to calcium and incidentally forming kidney stones is little understood. As a member of the Defeat Autism Now! Thinktank (a project of the Autism Research Institute), she continually dialogues with physicians and scientists who treat children with autism. She also consults with sulfur scientists and other basic scientists who are on the cutting edge of their field, encouraging them to study autism. Susan Owens does extensive analysis of labwork, specializing in studying ratios and their meaning in the plasma amino acid tests. She has compared the findings and reference ranges from labs all over the U.S. and world on different tests, including looking at how reference ranges are calculated for urinary tests on young children. Susan Owens recently joined Husson Science Research Institute, in Bangor, Maine as a Research Associate where she will be able to accelerate research into some new areas in the basic and applied science of oxalates.

Donna Gates
Author, "The Body Ecology Diet"

Donna Gates, a nutritional consultant, author and lecturer has helped thousands of people overcome candidiasis and other immune system disorders. Her book, "The Body Ecology Diet", was written after years of research to find a cure for her own candida-related health problems. Frustrated with conventional medicine, she embarked on a long course of study into many different healing concepts, including ancient Chinese medicine, macrobiotics, natural hygiene, raw foods and mega-supplement therapy. Incorporating the most beneficial components of each concept into her own system of health and healing, her success inspired her to share it with others.

Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride MD
Author, "Gut and Psychology Syndrome"

Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride holds a Degree in Medicine and Postgraduate Degrees in both Neurology and Human Nutrition. In her clinic in Cambridge she specialises in Nutrition for Children and Adults with Behavioural and Learning Disabilities, and Adults with Digestive and Immune System Disorders.

Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride set up The Cambridge Nutrition Clinic in 1998.  As a parent of a child diagnosed with learning disabilities, she was acutely aware of the difficulties facing other parents like her, and she has devoted much of her time to helping these families.  She realised that nutrition played a critical role in helping children and adults to overcome their disabilities, and has pioneered the use of probiotics in this field.

She believes that the link between learning disabilities, the food and drink that we take, and the condition of our digestive system is absolute, and the results of her work have supported her position on this subject.  In her clinic, parents discuss all aspects of their child's condition, confident in the knowledge that they are not only talking to a professional but to a parent who has lived their experience.  Her deep understanding of the challenges they face, puts her advice in a class of it's own.

Devin Houston, PhD.

Dr. Houston obtained a B.A. degree in Biology from Hendrix College in 1979. He then was awarded a B.S. degree in Medical Science in 1980 and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of South Alabama College of Medicine in 1987. Dr. Houston’s graduate work focused on how the aging process affected certain enzyme systems.

In 1990, Dr. Houston accepted a position at Saint Louis University School of Medicine. While there, he obtained the position as Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmacology and Physiology. His research focus was on characterizing the cannabinoid (marihuana) receptor as a possible model for Alzheimer’s research. Dr. Houston’s work was funded by several grants from the National Institutes of Health. He published several peer-reviewed papers, as well as presenting his finding at several symposia.

In 1997, Dr. Houston left academia for industry, and accepted a position as Manager of Research and Development at National Enzyme Company. While there, he upgraded the existing lab and instituted more advanced methods of analysis. Instrumental in new product development, he is the formulator and inventor of SerenAid(tm), an enzyme product currently distributed by Klaire Laboratories.

In March of 2000, Dr. Houston left National Enzyme and became a scientific consultant to the dietary supplement industry prior to founding Houston Nutraceuticals, Inc.

In this interview, Dr. Houston discusses digestive deficiencies common in many children with autism, and how using digestive enzyme supplementation may be a viable alternative to exclusionary diets, such as the "Gluten-Free/Casein-Free diet.
