Parents' Stories of Autism

As much work as it may be to care for and help an autistic child, the rewards are beyond profound. Each story is unique, but all show the hope of the great lives and and even highly functional lives that our kids can obtain, when we believe in them and never give up. Dramatic improvement and even recovery from the disabling features of autism are not only possible, it is happening for families around the globe.

The Reverend Lisa Sykes is the mother of a recovering autistic boy (Wesley) and an ordained minister, currently serving as Pastor for the Christ United Methodist Church in Richmond, Virginia. In this interview, Rev. Sykes discusses her introduction to autism, becoming an activist and how she came to having her son treated using the Geiers' "lupron" protocol to more effectively remove heavy metals by first lowering Wesley's abnormally high testosterone levels.

Lyn & Will Redwood

Lyn Redwood is a parent of a son with autism; Bachelor of Science in Nursing; Masters of Science in Community Health Nursing and ANA certified Family Nurse Practitioner; a member of the Fayette County Board of Health and Councilmember for the Town of Tyrone, Georgia; twenty years experience in the nursing profession.

Lyn Redwood and her family's struggle with Autism is prominently featured in the book "Evidence of Harm." In this interview, Lyn shares her family's introduction to autism (in parts 1 through 3) and some of the events that led to the creation of SAFEMINDS. Part 4 features Lyn's narrative of some of Will's therapies as a younger boy, and parts 5 & 6 feature a shared interview where Lyn and her son Will talk about Will's amazing progress in his recovery from Autism.

Julie Duffield

Julie Duffield

Julie Duffield holds a B.S. in Math, Chemistry and German. She quit teaching public school in 1998 when her son Michael was diagnosed with autism, shortly after her daughter Jessica was born. Jessica was later diagnosed with autism at 17 months of age. The Duffield children respond positively to biomedical treatment coupled with intense ABA and Sonrise therapies. Unfortunately, money has run out for full medial and therapy treatments, so the Duffields do the best they can to help their kids progress. Their progress is slow, but uphill, and the Duffields hold high hopes for full recovery from autism for both children. Julie Duffield started teaching high school again in Fall of 2004, in Carpentersville, Illinois.

Julie is co-founder and Research Director for the Foundation for Autism Information & Research, Inc. located in Hoffman Estates, Illinois. Julie's interview is presented in four segments. The first video clip has a few audio glitches.

Lynn M. Hamilton

Lynn M. Hamilton and her husband, Roger, are the parents of four children.  Lynn is the author of "Facing Autism: Giving Parents Reasons for Hope and Guidance for Help."  After Ryan, their oldest child, was diagnosed with autism shortly before his third birthday, the Hamiltons began to seek out effective treatments for combating this devastating disorder, including Applied Behavior Analysis, dietary interventions, and numerous biomedical interventions.  As a result, Ryan has made dramatic improvements in all areas of his life.  He has a great love for animals and one day wants to be a zookeeper.
